Preparing for Competitive Athletics

5th grade physical education is an extension of lower school PE, but it is also a specialized year in which the primary focus is to prepare students for competitive Middle School athletics. Classes are led by Middle School coaches and PE teachers and are treated like Middle School practices. Students are exposed to full units on each of the sports our older students compete in. Each unit culminates in a Friday afternoon intramural scrimmage where students can showcase their skills and abilities to work as a team.

List of 4 items.

  • Individual Approach

Our Physical Education programs are customized to meet each student's developmental stage, with ongoing assessments throughout the year to monitor and support individual growth. As students progress into middle school, students participate on school teams in interscholastic competition
  • Program Foundations

Our Lower School Physical Education program focuses on building a strong developmental foundation. Students acquire essential motor, manipulative, and rhythmic skills while developing an early appreciation for personal fitness and healthy lifestyle habits. Ultimately, the program is designed to inspire a lifelong commitment to physical activity and wellness
  • Physical Education Goals

Beyond developing physical skills, our program focuses on cultivating teamwork, sportsmanship, and collaborative problem-solving. We guide students in learning to follow directions and work cooperatively, while actively fostering the self-confidence and positive self-image they need to thrive both on and off the field.
  • Application of Skills

Once the foundation for skills is established, more complex challenges and the application of skills become the focus of P.E. classes. It is divided into two or three-week units based on a building block concept so that children can develop systematically with the program.
