  • Lower School

Students develop their ability to listen closely and recognize the qualities that make music expressive. Music appreciation experiences increase in complexity as students progress through the grades.

The production of music is an important part of the curriculum. Students learn to read and write musical notation, beginning with rhythm and progressing to pitches in the treble and bass clefs. They put this understanding into practice through singing, movement, rhythm instruments, Orff instruments, and performance.

Third Grade students engage in a year-long study of the recorder, while Fourth Grade students learn to ring English handbells. Students are also encouraged to respond to music both intellectually and emotionally, strengthening their understanding and appreciation of the music they study and perform.
  • Middle School

In Middle School, students deepen their understanding of musical concepts including melody, harmony, form, rhythm, and tone color while continuing to develop their musical literacy and performance skills.

In general music classes, students explore and produce music through movement and instrumental performance using rhythm instruments, Orff instruments, keyboards, and other classroom instruments.

Beyond the classroom, students may audition for musical ensembles, including Middle School Choir and Orff Ensemble. These ensemble opportunities provide a greater focus on singing and performance while helping students strengthen confidence, discipline, collaboration, and musical expression.
