A school’s endowment ensures that Gulf Stream School will be sustained well into the future.

The Gulf Stream School General Endowment for Scholarship pools gifts received in honor of people, special occasions and in general support of the School’s scholarship efforts.

The Gulf Stream School Memorial Scholarship was established in 1989 to receive gifts in memory of persons beloved by Gulf Stream and by the School Family.

The Florence Jackson Clough Endowment Fund for Scholarship was established by the bequest of Mrs. Clough, a generous friend and neighbor of the School. Each year, income from this fund is contributed toward Gulf Stream’s commitment to providing scholarship assistance to able students who otherwise would not be able to attend Gulf Stream.

The Anne G. Gibb Scholarship Fund provides income to be used each year to enrich the scholarship offerings at Gulf Stream School. In June 2004, an anonymous donor created a $100,000 challenge to award scholarship funds to a family or families that would not be able to afford the cost of tuition and/or fees. The recipient must meet the minimum requirements for admission and remain in good academic and disciplinary standing. Any unused portion of the income will be reinvested into the fund balance.

The Peter and Karen Lampl Foundation Endowed Fund for Scholarship was designated towards helping students who might not otherwise be able to attend Gulf Stream School and not current students whose parents are experiencing temporary difficulties. Sir Peter and Lady Lampl, the parents of three seasonal students, Katie ’09, Christopher ’11, and Stephanie ’14, are from England.

The Forrest C. Lattner Scholarship Fund was established in 1990 in memory of Forrest C. Lattner, father of Martha Lattner Walker ’49 and Susan Lattner Lloyd ’53. This fund assists qualified students who, because of financial need, would not be able to attend Gulf Stream School.

The Bergeron-Moquin Scholarship Fund was established in 2015 by a generous gift from Yves Moquin and Sylvie Bergeron whose daughter Julie is a member of the Class of 2017. This fund will provide income to enrich scholarship offerings by providing financial assistance for deserving students who might not otherwise be able to attend Gulf Stream School. Recipients will be determined by the Head of School and they will participate in every aspect of School life through graduation. They must meet the minimum requirements for admission and remain in good academic and disciplinary standing. The principal is to remain intact and any unused portion of the income will be reinvested.

The Mulliez Family Endowed Fund was created by a generous gift in 2013 as part of the Celebrating Our History, Inspiring Our Future 75th Anniversary Campaign. This Fund is intended to advance the School’s diversity by providing financial assistance to meritorious students who will bring a unique perspective to our student body and are unable to meet the financial requirements of enrollment. Financial aid will be provided for the selected student(s) annually through his/her graduation from Gulf Stream School. The funds are to be used for tuition and other related expenses at the discretion of the Head of School. The principal is to remain intact and any unused portion of the income will be reinvested in the Fund.

The Marshall Bullitt Watkins ’70 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2007 by Mr. Lowry Watkins, Jr. in memory of his brother. Marshall Bullitt Watkins attended Gulf Stream School from 1961 through 1968, leaving after Grade Seven. This fund will provide income to enrich the scholarship offerings by providing financial assistance for students who might not otherwise be able to attend Gulf Stream School. The recipient must meet the minimum requirements for admission and remain in good academic and disciplinary standing. The principal is to remain intact and any unused portion of the income will be reinvested.

The Edward B. Wilson Scholarship Fund was initiated in 2002 by the Laporte Family. Barbara and Stefan Laporte are the parents of Alexander ’99 and Geoffrey ’02 and began this fund to honor Ned Wilson, a dedicated educator, leader, and mentor to the Gulf Stream School Family.

The Florence Jackson Clough General Endowment Fund was established by the bequest of Mrs. Clough, a generous friend and neighbor of the School. Each year, income from this fund contributes directly to faculty and staff salaries.

The Gulf Stream School General Endowment Fund pools gifts intended to support the general operations of the School.

The Helping Children Grow Fund was established in 2006 in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher K. Malfitano. Chris and Jayne are the parents of Jeffrey ’02 and Clare ’07 and chaired the Continuing the Excellence: Campaign for Gulf Stream School from 2001 to 2007. Chris served as a Board member beginning in 1997 and as the Board President from 2004 to 2006. This endowment provides funds to assist students with expenses beyond tuition and fees, ensuring equal opportunities for every child in every aspect of school life. The funds are to be used at the discretion of the Head of School. The principal is to remain intact and any unused portion of the income will be reinvested.

The Sylvester Learning Skills Endowment Fund was made possible thanks to a generous gift from the Harcourt M. and Virginia W. Sylvester Foundation, Inc. Income from this fund will be used solely to support expenses related to the Learning Specialist and that program. The principal is to remain intact and any unused portion of the income will be reinvested.

Mr. and Mrs. James R. Byrne Endowment for Excellence in Upper School Teaching was established through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. James Byrne. The Byrnes are the parents of Kelsey ’02, Alison ’04, and Tucker ’08. This endowed fund provides income to support an award to be given at the discretion of the Head of School to an outstanding upper school teacher who demonstrates dedication, personal character, love of children as well as subject, is a superior role model, and makes extra-curricular contributions to the School.

The Francis N. Carpenter Endowment for Excellence in Lower School Teaching, initiated by Mr. Thomas Lynch and Mrs. Hilary Carpenter Lynch ’82, will provide income to support an award to be given at the discretion of the Head of School to an outstanding lower school teacher who demonstrates dedication, personal character, love of children as well as subject, is a superior role model, and makes extra-curricular contributions to the School.

The Mark G. Hollo Family Purposeful Investment Endowment for Excellence in Upper School Teaching was established in 2007 through the generosity of the Mark G. Hollo Family, whose daughter Caroline “Kiel” is a member of the class of 2011. This endowed fund provides income to reward a teacher for his or her dedication, personal character, and love of children as well as subject. The recipient will be determined by the Head of School and must be a superior role model and make extra-curricular contributions to the School. The principal is to remain intact and any unused portion of the income is to be reinvested.

The Gibb Chair in English was established in 1996-1997 in honor of Miss Anne Goodall Gibb, thanks to the generosity of many members of the School Family, to recognize her 25th year with Gulf Stream School. Income from this fund enhances the curriculum in ways which most benefit the English Department faculty and students. The funds are used to supplement the budget of the English Department at the discretion of the holder.

The Florence Jackson Clough Fund for Faculty Benefits was established by the bequest of Mrs. Clough, a generous friend and neighbor of the School. Funds go to increase the amount of retirement savings for faculty through their benefits package.

The James E. Cross Memorial Endowment Fund for Faculty Development was established in 1997 in memory of former Board President Dr. James E. Cross for the support of faculty development at Gulf Stream School.

The Lumpkin Family Foundation Chair for Faculty Development was initiated in 2004 by a generous grant from The Lumpkin Family Foundation. This grant will provide continuing education and professional development for faculty members to implement new programs in the area of global studies.

The James B. Orthwein, Jr. Family Endowment for Faculty Development was established in 1997 by Mr. James B. Orthwein, Jr., former Board President and parent of Jimmy ’95, Ross ’98, and Clark ’04. Income from this fund makes available opportunities for faculty members to work toward completing a graduate degree.

The Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Dockerty Fund for Faculty Professional Development was established in 2009 through a generous gift from Bob and Caron, the parents of Bobby ’09 and Margaux ’10 Dockerty. This fund provides annual income to members of the faculty seeking to further their education through professional development including summer travel abroad. The recipient, to be determined by the Head of School and the Administration, must submit a proposal for approval and a report to the faculty and donors upon completion of the agreed opportunity. The principal is to remain intact and any unused portion of the income will be reinvested.

The Marshall Bullitt Watkins ’70 Memorial Fund for the Library was established in 2009 by Mr. Lowry Watkins, Jr. in memory of his brother. Marshall Bullitt Watkins was an avid reader and attended Gulf Stream School from 1961 through 1968, leaving after Grade Seven. Income from this fund may be used to enhance both libraries’ collections or to curtail the costs associated with operating the facilities. Funds will be distributed annually equally at the discretion of the Head of School. The principal is to remain intact and any unused portion of the income will be reinvested.

The Gulf Stream School Technology Fund was initiated in 2011-2012 thanks to a gift from the Chester Foundation. The fund was established to further advance the role of technology across the curriculum. Funds may be used to research and purchase new hardware and software, to establish and support courses centered around technology and technology-aided learning, or to provide professional technology development for teachers. When the fund grows to a sufficient size, income may be used to support technology faculty positions. The donors started this fund with the intent that others would add to the principal in order to ensure the Gulf Stream School students and faculty have access to the most current technology. Annual income will be used at the discretion of the Head of School. The principal is to remain intact and any unused portion of the income will be reinvested.

The Building Maintenance Fund for Field House and Computer Center, established in 1996, provides funds for the upkeep of the School’s physical plant, specifically the maintenance of the Sylvester Field House and Sylvester Computer Center.

The Ann Rentschler Cassady ’41 Memorial Endowment Fund was established in 1997 by Mr. William Cassady, Miss Rita Cassady ’73, Miss Rowena B. Cassady Frazel ’77, Mrs. Raina B. Cassady ’75, Miss Rhiannon R. Cassady ’80, Mr. Frederick J. R. Cassady ’83, and Mrs. Rachel R. Cassady Nevelos ’84. The interest earned can be used for a student with special needs, to underwrite wholly or partially the tuition of a student with a special need, to fund or partially fund the salary of a teacher or tutor of a student with a special need, or added to the principal.

The Audrey P. and Martin S. Schwartz Family Endowment Fund for Mathematics, established in 1997 by Mr. and Mrs. Martin S. Schwartz, parents of Stacy ’97 and Bowie ’99, created prizes for the most outstanding Upper School mathematics students each year and for the Upper School student who has shown the most improvement in mathematics each year. It will also provide for ongoing faculty graduate study in mathematics and states that any unused income be added to the principal.

The Endowment for Trustee Operations uses funds to support the operating of the Board of Trustees.

The “Z” Fund was initiated in January, 2018 with a generous commitment from the Zarcadoolas and Galloway families and subsequent gifts from other members of the Gulf Stream School community. The families made this gift to honor Joseph J. Zaluski, Gulf Stream’s eighth Head of School who retired in 2019. Mr. Zaluski led Gulf Stream School for fourteen years and steadfastly promoted the value of different perspectives. Mr. Zaluski was also an unwavering advocate for the personal and professional growth of every member of his faculty and staff. This fund is designed for, but not limited to, use at the Head of School’s discretion for professional development opportunities and to honor and reward longtime, dedicated members of the faculty and staff. Dynamic teachers and leaders like Mr. Zaluski, inspire their audiences and provide valuable experiences that engage students, colleagues, and others to reach beyond expectations and achieve more. The principal of the “Z” fund is to remain intact and any unused portion of the income will be reinvested.
