About GSS
Gulf Stream School serves 250 children from surrounding communities in Pre-Kindergarten (3 year olds) to Grade 8. The School traces its beginnings to the polo stables of the newly formed Gulf Stream Golf Club. Still in the early stages of development, this small town just 15 miles south of Palm Beach found just what it needed when Ada Belle and William Johnston arrived to found the school in 1938. Initially, the school served a small number of seasonal students who came with their families to enjoy the pleasant winter climate.
With the donation of two additional polo stables by Mr. John Phipps, the School added boarding to the already established day program. Boarding remained for ten years. Nearly three decades later, the Johnstons, set about negotiating the transfer of the School to a foundation in order to guarantee its continued operation following their retirement. In 1962 the School was transferred to the Gulf Stream School Foundation and its first Board of Trustees was chosen.
The campus has changed since that first group of seasonal students in 1938. Dedicated trustees, parents, friends and alumnae have enabled the School to grow the property, as well as build a new library, classrooms, computer and science labs, a field house and auditorium. Mr. Joseph J. Zaluski continues many of the solid traditions inherited from six prior Heads of School. Today, Gulf Stream continues to offer a challenging academic program coupled with a sense of family, small size and respect for its heritage.
